One hobby of mine is to keep up with each county that I visit as I travel across the United States.  Simply put, if I set foot inside a county, I keep track with it using this map.  It is an interesting way of keeping up with where you have been, and it is more detailed than just listing which states you have been in.

As for me, I am 15 counties away from clinching the entire state of Alabama.  I need to take a trip to south Alabama sometime. I need to get Choctaw, Perry, Dallas, Wilcox, Monroe, Chambers, Bullock, Pike, Coffee, Russell, Barbour, Henry, and Houston counties in order to clinch Alabama. I have clinched one area, Washington D.C., but that doesn’t count. For states like Virginia it gets more complicated because individual cities are separate from the county themselves.

If any of you don’t think this is a weird obsession and if you would want a map, then visit this website and sign up. This map shows which counties have been visited the most. The redder the county, the more it has been visited; the bluer and whiter county, the less it has been visited.

    Hi Cody,

A wierd obsession? Not at all. Congratulations on your county pursuit. I wish I had started counting counties back when I was in college. Keep it up and you’ll get all 3,141 the counties or their equivilents in your lifetime. I’m about 84% of the way there myself and still get excited every time I cross a county line.

Your blog came up on my Google Alert for “Counting Counties” this morning. You may enjoy checking out my county counting blog at http://www.countycounting.blogspot.com.
