I have been doing a lot of reading and thinking lately about the universe and how it came to be.  How did it begin?  Will the universe end, and if so, how will it end?  What was there before the universe began? Did the universe begin at all?

The most commonly accepted theory to describe how the universe began is the big bang.  Approximately 15 billion years ago, the universe ballooned from something smaller than the atomic scale to something larger than our solar system in a fraction of a fraction of a second. Well, what happened before that?  I know what I am saying here has huge religious overtones, but if the mission of science is a relentless pursuit of truth, then the question of what was there before the big bang must be asked. Did God set in motion the events that caused the big bang? Was there another universe before ours?

If our universe has a beginning, will it have an end? Currently the universe is expanding, and it has been ever since the big bang, but no one is quite sure why it is still expanding. Gravity isn’t pulling everything back together, so something is causing the universe to not only expand, but accelerate at a faster rate. At this rate, our universe may not end so much as that all galaxies and stars will be isolated from each other.  Then again, will gravity eventually win over, causing the universe to begin to contract until there is a big crunch?

Did our universe begin at all? Who is to say that the big bang theory is correct? None of us were there to see it. Maybe an omnipotent being just created everything from scratch and there it was. Maybe the universe just IS.  Just some interesting things to think about.
