Firstly, sorry for not updating this blog in fifteen days.  I have been dealing with some personal issues lately, and I have not been in a mood to write about anything other than those personal issues, which I would like to keep this particular blog free of.

However, I do feel about writing about the recent events going on in the Middle East.  I don’t know everything about what’s going on, but I do know that Israel is being attacked by the terrorist organization Hezbollah based in Lebanon, and Israel has recently vowed to defend itself against any country that cooperates with the organization. As a result, many predominately Islamic countries (Syria, Iran, Jordan) have aligned against Israel while Israel’s closest allies (United States, Germany) have sided with Israel, saying that Israel as a right to defend itself against terrorism.

This conflict will have enormous international implications.  Obviously, this is going to cause the price of crude oil to increase (what doesn’t cause it to increase ). Experts have said that prices could reach $80 per barrel as early as next week.  Secondly, this conflict is going to polarize the world.  Either one supports Israel and its right to defend itself against terrorism, or one is against Israel’s actions to occupy Palestinian territories.  It is not clear how broad this conflict will become, and as a result it isn’t clear how many countries will be involved in the conflict.  Some have already called this the beginning stages of World War III.  Personally I think that is a fear-mongering tactic used by right-wing journalists to appease their audience.  On the other hand, the United States, as well as some European countries, may get involved in this conflict, which could plunge everyone into total war.

I am not going to write on here what I think the ultimate solution to this problem would be, because that would offend and upset many people.  I will say this: the region does not know what peace is, nor do I think will the region ever see peace for a long time.  The rift between those people comes from centuries of conflict over who has the right to occupy the region.  It is very difficult to bridge that rift.
