Astrophysicist Steven Hawking said at a lecture in Hong Kong Tuesday that the ability for the human race to colonize space would be essential for the survival of the human race because Earth could be hit with a disaster that would make life on this planet impossible. Hawking suggests that a Moon colony can exist in 20 years and a Mars base in 40 years. In 100 years the human race will have the technology available to create self-sustaining colonies in space.
