Let the Birmingham Media (Weather) Wars Begin!
Published May 6th, 2006 in Media/TV/InternetGosh, after looking at local promos for FOX 6 and ABC 33/40’s James Spann’s response to it, it seems like there is a war going on. Recently, I saw a FOX 6 promo that directly refers to ABC 33/40 giving away prises as a way to attract viewers while FOX 6 “empowers viewers.” On a weather forum named TalkWeather, the comments exchanged between FOX 6 and ABC 33/40 weather team personel inside this thread were rather heated, to say the least.
With similar tactics used in ad blitzes from both stations as one would see in a slugout for Alabama governor, viewers are left to wonder whether they are voting for someone to run public office or to inform the public. It is great that there is such competition in the Birmingham Designated Market Area (DMA), but sometimes it seems like both sides just need to lighten up a bit.
