This website lists some down-to-earth reasons for exploring, visiting, and eventually colonizing the solar system.

Some of the reasons mentioned include:

• Give the next generation dreams and goals to fulfill
• Become one human race against many races and religions pitted against once another
• Open up resources for use by everyone so that the gap between the haves and the have-nots closes
• Set leadership goals, and propel the United States back to the forefront of space exploration (Russia wants to put a mine on the Moon by 2025)
• Discovering, researching, and putting to use technologies that would be used to explore and colonize the solar system
